Welcome to Best Wood Pool Heater – my name is John.
I started this site because I was searching for a way to use wood instead of electricity to heat up my pool. Where I live I have all the fire wood I need and a bit more. I didn’t know at that time there was manufacturers that build wood pool heaters, so I was looking for pointers to build one myself. But after a short research I found a forum where they talked about wood pool heaters.
After some online research I found out, that it was much easier and probably the same cost to buy one than to build it myself. Now I started this site to tell others about this cheap way of heating up their pools because it wasn’t easy to find any good sites with the right information. Also I will write about where you
can get the cheapest price on a wood pool heater and secondly have you avoid being scammed.
If you’ve reached this, the homepage of my site, you’ll be able to find out exactly what you need to know from the areas below:

I’ve got a mail from a family in Arkansas and the have given up on their wood pool heater because they were shovelling firewood into the wood pool heater like a stoker on an old train. They didn’t write anything about what kind of firewood they were using. But in any kind of wood fired stove you have to use good quality of wood to make it cost-effective. Some firewood burns faster depending on what tree the fire woods come from. And the faster it burns the less heat or energy it contains.
The sizes of the logs you are using have something to say too. If you are using small logs or kindling wood it will burn a lot faster.
The Right Firewood for a Wood Pool Heater
Kindling is only used for starting the fire after that you only need medium or big sized logs. And they will last a whole night through when using the right quality. I personally only have to restart my fire three or four times a year because I have it going by adding more logs two or three times a day, depending on the outdoor temperature. In the cold months I add one or two medium sized logs in the morning and again in the afternoon when I get home from work. In the evening I add a couples logs more and there are still embers in the morning.
Fire Wood Quality for Wood Pool Heater
The quality of wood is a fairly complicated matter. But I’ve used some time researching it on the internet. But it all comes down to the density of the fibres in the wood. The higher the density the better quality and thereby it’s burning longer and produces more heat.
A simple test is the weight of the fire wood. If you have two pieces of fire wood at the exact same size the heavy one of them have highest quality if they contain the same amount of moisture. But to make it simpler I’ve made a list of trees that gives the best firewood quality for your wood pool heater starting with the best.
List Of Trees For Firewood To A Wood Pool Heater
Beech
Oak
Ash
Maple
Birch
Elm
Pine
Fir

I got a mail from a lady in UK and she wrote that they had a lot of problems with smoke coming from their wood burning pool heater.
I never had that problem but I talked to my brother-in-law from whom I get all my firewood. And he told me that it’s most likely that the firewood isn’t dry enough. The wood have to dry at least for a year before it’s used in a wood burning pool heater or any other wood fired stove.
Buying Fire Wood for a Wood burning Pool Heater
When you are buying firewood from a dealer you have to make sure that the firewood you are buying is dried. If not you have to stack it somewhere of the ground e.g. on a pallet and make sure it is covered so it doesn’t rain on it. It is often cheaper to buy non-dry firewood and dry it yourself.
Starting a Fire in a Wood burning Pool Heater
Another thing that could cause a lot of smoke, is when you don’t get the fire properly started. You have to start your fire with kindling wood and a good airflow. When the fire is well on its way you add a log or two while keeping a high airflow.
If you’re trying to start a fire with low airflow and big logs the burning process will be incomplete and that causes a lot of smoke. It can take several hours before the fire reach the temperature where the burning process in your wood burning pool heater is complete. In that time it will produce a lot of smoke.
Firing Up A Wood Fired Pool Heater Step By Step
- Start by building a pile of newspapers and lots of kindling wood and put a match to it. Keep the door open.
- When the fire catches on put one or two medium sized logs on. Close the door half way.
- When the logs are on fire add one or two more logs or a big log. Close the door and open the air valves all the way.
- Give it about 30 minutes then close the air valves half way. And the fire should be perfect.
If you use the right quality firewood for you wood burning pool heater, it should only be necessary to add more wood two or three times a day.

I’ve had a lot of response on my blog on wood pool heater – and I’m trying to answer all the mails. But some of the questions I get could be questions other people have, so I’m going to write about them here.
A guy from Maryland asked me about controlling the heat in the pool when using a wood pool heater? He had built his own wood pool heater and had some issues controlling the fire. In my wood pool heater that’s not a problem. Of course I haven’t built my wood pool heater myself, so some clever guys from ExtendaSwim have figured out this solution.
Wood Pool Heaters and Airflow
I have air valves in the bottom of my wood pool heater and they control the airflow in my burning chamber. The bigger the airflow the faster the wood burns in chamber and the more heat is absorbed in to the water. So during the hot months in the summer I turn down the airflow and the wood are burning slowly and thereby don’t overheat my pool.
Another thing I have noticed is when I keep my air valves at maximum airflow and the wood is burning fast it doesn’t seem to use all the heat from the firewood. I get more heat out of my firewood when controlling the airflow in my wood pool heater.

A wood pool heater sounds like an old way of doing things. The heating source may be old fashion but the technology behind a wood pool heater is extremely modern.
The burning chamber has a high quality insulation that prevents heat to radiate from wood pool heater. That heat is absorbed by the water that circulates in the pipes in top of the burning chamber and back in to the pool.
How to Install a Wood pool heater?
The wood pool heater is easily installed. There is no need for any plumbers or electrician. You attach the pipe from the pool pump to the heaters intake with pvc pipes. And the outtake from the heater is attached to the pool. The cold water from the pool is pumped in to the wood pool heater and the hot water is running into the pool. It’s that simple.
Is A Wood pool heater Safe?
Even though the water in the wood pool heater get boiling hot, it never turns in to dangerous steam because it’s forced to circulate by the pump. There is no high-pressure boiler, no gas and no electricity, so you don’t have to have any special training to operate a wood pool heater. Obviously you have to be careful around fire but if you can operate a barbecue you can operate a wood pool heater.
How Efficient Are a Wood pool heater?
If you buy the right size heater it’s capable of increasing the water temp from 60 to 85 degrees in 1-2 days according to the manufacture. And in my experience it’s that is correct. They also recommend using a solar pool cover when we are not using the pool, which helps to keep the heat from radiating from the water.
If You Are Looking For a Cheap and Easy Way To Heat Your Pool…
Then a wood burning pool heater might be the right thing for you. I have seen wood burning pool heater online at a price of more than $10.000. By doing a little research online I found a high quality wood burning pool heater for less than quarter of the price. So if you intent to buy a wood burning pool heater I would recommend you go straight to their site now and order yours now.

If you found this site about wood burning pool heater you are probably looking to buy one? And one of the most important things to make sure when you do is to get the right size. The only wood burning pool heater I have tried is the American produced Extanda Swim. They make three different sizes small, large and X-Large.

The small wood burning pool heater is used for a pool up to 10,000 Gallons. The Large one is used for a pool between 10,000 – 30,000 gallons. And the X-Large is used from 30,000 gallons and up.
By mistake I bought the X-large wood burning pool heater even though our pool only contains around 29,000 gallons. But I’m glad I did because it makes is so much easier to heat up my pool when the temperature isn’t that high outside.
But make sure you don’t buy it to small then you won’t get the best out of your wood burning pool heater. If you are in doubt of the size of your pool than just make an online search for a pool calculator.

My gas bill used to be around $1000 more a year when I got my gas pool heater. And even if I didn’t have all that free firewood for my wood burning pool heater it would only cost me around $200 – 300 a year in firewood. So I save at least $700 – 800 a year. That mean that my wood burning pool heater have saved me more than the cost of the pool heater.
Couldn’t you save that kind of money with a solar panel pool heater? I have heard the question many times. Well I was looking for a way to use wood to heat up my pool because I have it for free. And a solar pool heater couldn’t heat up my pool to an enjoyable temperature in November. If I was living in a warmer and sunnier climate I would probably have chosen a solar system instead of my wood burning pool heater.
Extended pool season with the wood burning pool heater
Because a wood fired pool heater is so effective we have extended the pool season quite a bit. Last year we were swimming in our outdoor pool at Thanksgiving and the water was 85 degrees. When we had the gas pool heater our pool season ended in October because it was way too expensive to heat up the pool. And this year we had our first swim in the beginning of April. With our wood burning pool heater we have an 8 month pool season. If I insulated our above ground pool we might even extend the season further.

That was the question I asked myself back in 2005 when I looked in to buying one. I have access to an almost endless supply of firewood so I thought that there might be a way to heat the pool with a wood burning pool heater. At that time I hadn’t heard of anyone using wood to heat up their pool so I spend quite some time on the net researching before buying a wood burning pool heater.
Today I can honestly answer the question; Are wood burning pool heater any good? And the answer is YES!
Wood burning Pool Heater Benefits
First of all it’s very easy to install. No need for plumbers or electricians. I’m an accountant and I did all the installing myself. It took some time to get the wood burning pool heater in place because it’s heavy. But when that was done I had the wood burning pool heater installed and fired up within two hours. And since then I haven’t done anything to it.
Obviously I have changed the filters in the pump, but I haven’t done anything to the wood burning pool heater except from firing up the wood.
No Utility Bills with Wood burning Poll Heater
It doesn’t cost me a dime to heat up my pool now. No extra gas or electrical bill. And even if I hadn’t got access to all that firewood, the cost would only be $200 – 300 a year for wood. After I’ve got my wood burning pool heater I’ve saved around $1000 a year on my utility bill.
Wood burning Pool Heater Demands No Maintenance
One of the big benefits by having a wood burning pool heater is that the only maintenance is that I have to sweep the ashes from the fire box. Not like my gas pool heater that broke down once in a while and I had to pay for the repairs or replacements.
Eco-Friendly Wood burning Pool Heater
Today there is a lot of talk about global warming and we have to be eco-friendly. By heating my pool with a wood burning pool heater I’m using a co2-neutral heating source. A tree is absorbing CO2 while growing and produces a lot of oxygen. So when burning the wood I haven’t added more CO2 to the air, which I would have done if I still used gas.
Another thing is that the wood burning pool heater is very good insulated, so the heat is added to the water in the pool and not into the air around the heater. I have put a solar pool cover on my pool to minimize the loss of heat from evaporation. And at the same time it saves me a lot of time cleaning the pool by keeping leaves and other stuff out of the pool.
Wood burning Pool Heater – The Conclusion
From all the benefits from above you can see that a wood burning pool heater are a good investment. It saves you time, money and energy. Aren’t there any unfavourable things to a wood burning pool heater? Well, I have to put a log on to the fire a couple of times a day when we use the pool. But on the other hand in my opinion a wood burning pool heater heats the water faster (and much cheaper) than my gas pool heater.
I use a wood burning pool heater from Extenda Swim and I’m very pleased with it. Last year by thanksgiving we were swimming in water with a temperature at 85 degrade – and we live in Portland.
